British Expands Toxic Alcohol Poisoning Advisory List with An additional 11 Countries
The UK Foreign Office has placed 11 further countries to its travel advisory list about the dangers of industrial alcohol contamination from contaminated beverages.
This updated travel guidance now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after reports of "a global increase in the number of reported cases" of industrial alcohol contamination.
Only last month, the government had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current roster, following a number of notable cases including the tragic death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.
Travellers are being warned that as little as tiny quantities of toxic alcohol can cause vision loss or loss of life within 12 to 48 hours.
What is Methanol and How is it Employed?
Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol often employed in coolant, car cleaning liquid, and thinner. It is not meant for ingestion.
Although it is inherently formed during the production of beverages, reputable manufacturers reduce it to minimal, harmless amounts for drinking through the distillation process.
However in certain nations, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to cut costs, and since it is tasteless and odourless, it is very difficult to notice.
Authorities' Guidance for Travelers
Government representative Hamish Falconer said that each tourist should be aware of the indicators of toxic alcohol poisoning.
"While having drinks in foreign countries, stick to reputable establishments and steer clear of local brews or free shots," the minister advised.
"In case something feels off, for example a headache that's much more severe than normal or blurred eyesight – contact a doctor right away."
The full list of nations listed as presenting a danger of toxic alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
