Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of documents involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the former Trump administration highlighting the noticeable presence of former President Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship portray former President Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Defends Redactions with Strong Rhetoric
Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement issue,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who released a detailed memo describing the redaction process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in some of the materials, the extensive redactions prompt serious concerns about the information may be concealed behind them. A number of Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.
“The public are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie asserted the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future legislature may move to remove the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, today’s document release grossly does not comply with both the spirit and the letter of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing pundits and former President allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The release—originating from a justice department run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—includes scores of documents that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men depicted in pictures have their identities obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring high-profile individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, enabled some conservative figures to go on the attack.
“It’s pretty ironic how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to release documents that depict Bill Clinton swimming nude with a pedophile,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents show Bill Clinton without a shirt in a jacuzzi with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” wrote attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only 1 reason Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Blackmail.”
Clinton Spokesperson Issues Statement
Bill Clinton has repeatedly said he knew of no criminal activity by Epstein and has never been alleged to have participated in any wrongdoing. “The White House has not been hiding those files for an extended period only to release them late on a weekend to shield Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a comment.
“This is about protecting themselves from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and conceal permanently. So they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but it isn’t about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response concluded.
Overall Rightwing Commentary Seems Subdued
Nonetheless, broader discourse on the political right was relatively subdued following the release, especially when juxtaposed against the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a bill mandating the files' release.
The commentator, who not long ago accepted press credentials at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a complete disclosure. In February, she chastised the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of rightwing personalities were given hard-copy folders of materials that contained no previously unseen information.
