Google to Invest $15bn to Establish AI Computing Facility in the Indian Subcontinent

Computing Infrastructure
India stands as a prime location for data centres due to its affordable data rates and rapidly growing internet user base.

The parent firm of Google Alphabet plans to commit fifteen billion dollars for constructing an AI computing facility in the state of Andhra Pradesh in southern India.

The facility, to be established in the coastal city of the city of Visakhapatnam, is going to be a segment of Google's international system of AI centers spread across a dozen nations.

"This represents the biggest AI hub that we are going to be investing in worldwide, excluding the US," Thomas Kurien announced at an conference in capital Delhi recently, adding that the funding is to be distributed over the next five years.

The revelation arrives during a period US President Donald Trump has been urging companies from the United States to give priority to domestic investment.

The Expanding Position of India in AI Infrastructure

India has emerged as a key destination for AI data centres. The nation's inexpensive data services and quickly expanding online population have turned it into a hub for expansion of cloud and artificial intelligence for technology leaders.

"The facility will introduce our pioneering tech solutions to enterprises and users in India, speeding up artificial intelligence advancement and promoting progress throughout the nation," said Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.

Initiative Particulars

A definitive arrangement to conclude the venture is set to be signed this Tuesday, local government officials said.

"It constitutes a massive leap for the digital progression of our state, progress, and international reputation," stated the minister for technology Nara Lokesh.

This initiative will combine cloud and AI infrastructure with renewable energy systems and an broader fiber-optic system.

The State's Data Hub Strategy

The venture is included in the local administration's plan to establish 6GW of computing facility capacity by 2029.

Computing facilities are physical facilities that house the computing and networking equipment that companies use to collect, process, store, and distribute data.

They feature hosting servers, data storage systems and network equipment like firewalls and routers, in addition to the essential electricity and temperature control systems to function properly.

Investment Incentives

In Andhra Pradesh, the government has been providing subsidised land and electricity to attract international investors.

Sector Expansion

The country's computing facility market has expanded quickly during the last five years, crossing the 1GW capacity mark in 2024 and nearly tripling its 2019 level.
